Map showing location of Withypool

Withypool lies in the centre of Exmoor in West Somerset. It is a small village of less than 300 people and dates from ancient times. Known as Widepolle, Widipol and Withypoole over the centuries the village lies in the valley of the River Barle and sits on the picturesque 'Two Moor Way'. The word 'withy' meaning 'willow'. The area around Withypool has been inhabited since the Bronze Age and a stone circle can still be seen on top of Withypool Hill. Of the three Brightworthy barrows on the Common, two still survive. In the 14th century, Geoffrey Chaucer was in charge of the village in his duties as forester of North Petherton.
