Cheddar Town in Somerset
Location
Once an important dairy farming area also housing miners from the nearby Mendip Hills, Cheddar in Somerset is now synomonous with the cheese of the same name. With a current population of about 5,000 it is located in the east of Somerset close to the town of Axbridge and is roughly midway between the city of Wells and the coast at Weston-super-Mare. The village of Cheddar is known to date from Neolithic (Stone Age) times with archaeology found at nearby Cheddar Gorge. The Gorge is the largest gorge in the United Kingdom and includes several show caves including the spectacular Gough's Cave. It is now a major tourist destination along with the caves at Wookey Hole some 7 miles distant.
