Cricket St. Thomas Hotel. Although the elegant mansion of Cricket St.Thomas is avowedly Regency in style the present house was designed by the neo-Classicist Sir John Soane and set within glorious landscaped gardens based on a design by Capability Brown. The Manor's proud history actually predates 1086. Since its rebuilding in 1820, Cricket has remained virtually untouched, its integrity as one of England's most cherished stately homes completely intact. Uncompromised too is the nearby 12th century parish church of St. Thomas, with its Walled Garden, rare Sicilian chestnut font and brocade cloth which adorned the 1953 Coronation altar. Such nobility attends the estate's entire tradition. Following the stewardship of various notable medieval families, the 18th century saw Cricket forge maritime links with the Hoods, the Bridports and the Nelsons. Today, you needn't travel far to the sea; the charming fishing village of Lyme Regis and the dramatic Heritage Beach are just 30 minutes away. There is also a full fitness studio with swimming pool, tropicarium and sauna. Cricket St. Thomas enjoys stunning vistas, and gardens of historic note. Mature yews, maples and cedars have been carefully preserved. It was under one of these Lady Emma Hamilton and Lord Nelson met for their romantic trysts - visit Lord Nelson's seat overlooking one of the spectacular views. Exeter city centre and Exeter Airport are both approximately 20 minutes away, whilst the Jurassic coast towns of Beer, Branscombe, Seaton, Sidmouth and Lyme Regis are all within a 15 minute drive. The Belfry at Yarcombe. The Belfry at Yarcombe is a wonderful place to unwind and relax. The Grade II listed building is a former village school situated in picturesque Yarcombe. The resident owners, Neil and Sarah-Jane and their cat Saona, although seldom seen, extend a genuinely warm welcome, creating an atmosphere of friendliness and peaceful relaxation. Modern British gastro food is passionately created and guests may begin the day with anything from a slice of toast to a whole side of smoked haddock, full English or the winter special of eggy panetoné. Dinner guests are asked to choose 24 hours in advance from the menu and their meal will be freshly prepared to order, from the fabulous range of fresh and local ingredients. The restaurant is limited to just 12 covers and is open to non-residents too, so guests are advised to reserve a table should they wish to dine in order to avoid disappointment. A splendid and reasonably price wine list accompanies.
