Course tutor: Stephen Stokes of Bodden Cross Studio
You will begin by carving your year of birth, or another date important to you, in Roman numerals. You will then go on to explore the wonders of your 26 new friends, the letters of the alphabet.
By the end of the course you will have begun your own project of carving a sign in a typeface of your own choosing
Tools for the early stages of the course will be loaned to you by Stephen, this includes a mallet, straight edged chisel, appropriate curved chisel and carving station. Timber for the first project is included. For the final project you will need to source your own timber or purchase a suitable piece from Stephen. Depending on size this will be around £10 - £20.
Letter carving involves the use of very sharp tools – part of the course will cover sharpening. Please do not sign up for this course if you are unable to handle sharp tools safely. Neither Stephen nor the Bishop's Palace can be held responsible for any incidents that may occur during this course.
