The Somerset Poppies

11th - 25th November

The Somerset Poppies is a public installation of artificial poppies, to be displayed at The Bishop's Palace in November. The installation will feature over 8000 poppies made by children at schools in and around Wells.

The Somerset Poppies

Each poppy will represent a serviceman from Somerset, or who served in a Somerset regiment, who lost his life in World War One.

The poppies will be on public display for two weeks, during which time the aim is to engage members of the public from across the county in the appreciation of collaborative artwork and county-specific heritage.

This collaborative art piece will commemorate 100 years since the end of the conflict. Inspired by the Blood Stained Lands and Seas of Red display by Paul Cummings, and Rob Heard's Shrouds of the Somme, the project will also engage children in the appreciation of current artwork by contemporary artists.

Poppies can be pre-ordered for £5 at All proceeds will be donated to the Wells branch of the Royal British Legion, and SSAFA, the armed forces charity. The exhibition (11th - 25th November) is free to view, on the Croquet Lawn, beginning with the ceremonial planting of the final poppy at 11am on 11th November.

*Preview event: on the evening of 10th November (6pm - 7pm), the poppies will be displayed under floodlights with children from local choirs singing songs from the WW1 era. Tickets cost £15 and only 100 are available to buy from The Bishop's Palace Shop or online HERE. This event will be held outside unless the weather is extremely bad. Proceeds from the preview event will go to The Royal British Legion, the SSAFA (Soldiers, Seamen, Airmen and Families Association) and The Bishop's Palace.*
