Letter Carving in Wood for Beginners
5th April - 10th May
A six-week course introducing the art of letter carving in wood. Led by Stephen Stokes of Bodden Cross Studio, a letter carving professional for the last six years, you will learn about the tools and techniques involved.
The course will begin with you carving your year of birth, or another date important to you, in Roman Numerals. You will then go on to explore the wonders of your 26 new friends, the letters of the alphabet.
By the end of the course you will have begun your own project, carving a name in a typeface of your own choosing.
As letter carving involves the use of very sharp tools; part of the course will cover sharpening - please do not sign up for this course if you are unable to handle sharp tools safely.
Neither Stephen nor The Bishop's Palace can be held responsible for any incidents that may occur during this course.
The course will run every Thursday beginning the 5th April and running to the 10th May 2018, from 2pm to 4pm in the Stableyard Room at The Bishop's Palace. The cost is £90 for the whole course. To book, please contact or visit The Palace Shop (01749 988111 ext. 205.)
Tools for the early stages of the course will be loaned to you by Stephen. These include a mallet, straight edged chisel, appropriate curved chisel and carving station. You are asked to purchase your own carving knife (£11 ex p&p) to complete the final project.
Stephen will give you details of this tool & where to purchase it during the course. Timber for the first project is included. For the final project please source your own timber or purchase a suitable piece from Stephen. Depending on size this will be around £10.
