10th April - 1st May

This is a wonderful opportunity to learn a traditional hand embroidery technique with Liz Tapper of The Art of the Needle.

Beginners Goldwork course

This is a wonderful opportunity to learn a traditional hand embroidery technique with Liz Tapper of The Art of the Needle.

Goldwork, a type of embroidery using metal thread, has been used extensively over the centuries on ecclesiastical vestments, as well as on military uniforms, flags and banners. During the late 12th and mid 14th centuries the artisans of England produced particularly excellent embroidered work using silk and gold threads. This period was known as Opus Anglicanum.

Those attending will be taught how to apply padding using craft felt, when to wax the thread, how to use and couch different types of gold metal thread and how to use cutwork.

The last week will be spent designing your own piece.
About the tutor: Elizabeth Tapper is an exhibiting Member of Somerset Art Works and a Full Member of the Somerset Guild of Craftsmen. Following an early interest in hand embroidery, Liz went on to study on the Royal School of Needlework Apprenticeship, graduating with a First Class qualification in 1998.

Liz teaches at venues around the country, both for the RSN and privately through her own company 'The Art of the Needle'. She also designs and sells embroidery kits and embroidered art in a range of techniques, including goldwork, blackwork and whitework.

The course will run every Tuesday, starting on Tuesday 10th April until Tuesday 1st May from 10am – 12pm and costs £65. Only 10 spaces are available to ensure each student gets lots of attention.
Tea and coffee are included in the class price.
